Awareness Raising
Awareness-raising is central to the work of APT because of the hidden nature of human trafficking.
Facts
Human trafficking, together with drugs and arms trafficking, is one of the most lucrative, illegal criminal activities in the 21st century.
It is estimated that around four million women and children are trafficked yearly around the world for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
Countries where it takes place are classified as places of origin, transit or destination. Ireland is now classified as a destination and transit country for human trafficking.
Action to combat Human Trafficking
APT tries to ensure that information on the topic is brought to the attention of the wider public. APT focuses on addressing the issue in second and third level schools and colleges, parish groups, men’s and women’s groups and various associations. A PowerPoint Presentation suited to the various groups has been developed. Please email us if you would like a CD. You can also download it here in PDF format (7,8 MB)
APT has made submissions to the policy-makers in relation to the Criminal Law (Human Trafficking) Act of 2008. Its particular emphasis is on the protection and care of the trafficked person.
APT contributes relevant articles to periodicals and magazines. Flyers have been published and distributed widely throughout the country.
Members of APT are available to speak to groups on request and for radio and television interviews.
